God Commands Us To Care

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Theme of the Week: Being Good Stewards of Creation

Bible Verse: “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” Genesis 2:15 NIV

Scripture Reading: Genesis 1:26-30, Genesis 2:15, Leviticus 25:1-7

Maybe we’ve made it to this part of the week, and you’re still looking for a compelling reason to care about creation. Good points have been made – You can see how someone could make the argument to be an active part of caring for creation – But maybe you’re still not there. That’s ok, thanks for engaging this topic so far this week! Hopefully what is written today can help.

I think God clearly lays out His intention for our relationship as humans with creation. Right from the very beginning and throughout the Bible, God refers to the fact we are to be in charge of creation. If you have time, read the scriptures listed today and then research others. I think you will find the same sentiments. I think you will discover that we are commanded to care for creation because we are servants. The owner is asking for us to do it.

Some may say, “but those are Old Testament verses – Do they still apply?”. The exact people that these verses are written to are obviously not around anymore, but the principles stated there still stand the test of time. We see a pattern in Scripture: God’s heart for His Creation is clear. He cares, so we need to as well.

As mentioned before, I think if we all committed to this – even just a little bit – a lot could be done. This is an opportunity to honor God. It’s not wasted time when our time is given to do that.
