The Judgment of Citizens

In Daily Devotional by Jacques Van Dyk

Bible Passage: “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 3:20 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:11-22

Property-owning male citizens of ancient Rome were required to serve in the army at some point in their lives, as this duty represented their loyalty and commitment to the Roman Empire.

This expectation included not only military service within the borders of the Empire but also a responsibility to promote the Empire’s interests during their travels, ensuring that they upheld Roman values and reputation wherever they went.

In a similar manner, as citizens of Heaven, we are called to demonstrate our loyalty to Christ by actively promoting His Kingdom on earth. This means living in a way that reflects our heavenly citizenship, embodying the values and teachings of Christ in our daily interactions.

We are encouraged to transition our priorities from worldly pursuits—those that once brought us temporary satisfaction—to a focus on eternal truths and spiritual growth. As believers in Christ, we are challenged to abandon the fleeting pleasures of our past and instead seek fulfillment in our relationship with Him and our commitment to His mission in the world.

We will ultimately be held accountable for our heavenly citizenship and should strive to reflect the values that come with it.

First and foremost, men need to live with an eternal perspective. This means cultivating a mindset that prioritizes the hope of Heaven, allowing it to inspire not only our thoughts but also our daily actions. We should consistently remind ourselves of the greater purpose that lies beyond our earthly existence and make choices that embody this hope.

Secondly, as we looked at yesterday, we must be diligent stewards of the talents, gifts, and resources that God has entrusted to us. This involves actively developing our abilities, sharing our unique skills, and wisely managing our time and finances to further God’s ultimate purposes. By recognizing that our resources are not merely for our own benefit, but for the greater good, we can create a significant impact both in our communities and beyond.

Lastly, love and service are crucial components of our faith. We should express our love through generosity—supporting those in need and contributing to causes that foster positive change. Our acts of service must align with the teachings of Jesus, embodying compassion, kindness, and humility. In doing so, we can leave an enduring legacy that reflects our commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of others, thus fulfilling our calling as citizens of Heaven and ensuring our reward on Judgment Day.

Prayer: Father, thank You for our citizenship in Heaven. Grant us the courage and mindset to reflect this citizenship in every part of our lives here on earth. Amen.

Reflection: In what ways does your life reflect the fact that you are a man who is a citizen of Heaven?
