As Christian men, we’re called to strengthen our bodies both spiritually and physically. The Bible talks about the importance of honouring our bodies in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, saying:
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.”
In a world where our outward appearance is so highly valued and scrutinized, we often forget what is most important: nourishing our bodies from the inside with real, wholesome food that brings us long-lasting health.
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body.”
How Can Men Choose the “Right” Diet?
Now, sometimes choosing the right diet can be a struggle. We may have experienced in the past all sorts of trendy diets, but perhaps none of them worked. One of the things I learned over the years, not only about exercise but also about dieting, is that it is not one-size-fits-all. Everyone reacts differently to different diets. So how do we know which one to choose?
The “Three-Hour Diet”
Something that has paid tremendous dividends for me is the “three-hour diet,” in which every three hours, you are eating. Besides the obvious breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you need to incorporate healthy snacks in between, such as fruit, vegetables, or nuts. When we eat every three hours, we give our bodies the nutrients they need while also supporting clear thinking and a more balanced relationship with hunger.[1]
Seriously? A Vegetarian Diet?
For some men, and I know many, a vegetarian diet is one that most have no desire to try. At one point in my life, I was that person until I read about the health benefits. A vegetarian diet that consists of vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains, and nuts can help minimize the risk of disease, help you better control your weight, and even boost your longevity.[2]
Personally, I always had the mindset that vegetarian meals would taste bland and flavourless, which, looking back, was simply a poor excuse for not trying. A vegetarian diet offers so many different and tasty variations of dishes that can satisfy a guy’s taste buds. News Flash: Junk Food is Bad!
I realize I am stating the obvious, but for some guys, the need to eliminate junk food from their repertoire may not be so obvious.
Now, I am a realist and understand that it may not be entirely possible for a man to eliminate the need to eat that bag of chips (something I often struggle with). However, there is a wise and well-known phrase, “everything done in moderation,” and I believe this applies perfectly to junk food.
Instead of eating two bags of chips a week, cut back to one bag, with the goal of eliminating the need to want it more than we probably should.
At one point in my life, I attempted not to eat junk food for a month, and I was shocked by what I saw and, more importantly, felt. Throughout the latter part of that month, I noticed my skin clearing up, felt less bloated, had higher energy levels, and saw a reduction on the scale. If you feel up to the challenge, I encourage you to give it a try!
At the end of the day, the Bible talks about the importance of honoring the Lord with what we put into our bodies, as 1 Corinthians 10:31 says: “So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God”.
