A Believer’s Final Judgment

In Daily Devotional by Jacques Van Dyk

Bible Passage: “So then each of us will give an account of himself to God.” (Romans 14:12 ESV)

Scripture Reading: Romans 14:10-12; Revelation 20:11-15

Many men, even Christian men, fear Judgment Day.

The truth is that no one enjoys being judged. This fear is heightened in this case because it comes with eternal consequences. We worry that our sins will be exposed, that we will be publicly shamed, and that all our hidden mistakes will be revealed for everyone to see.

However, before we delve deeper into this topic, let’s take a step back and examine what the Bible says about this judgment.

Scripture suggests that there will be at least two different “final judgments”: one for unbelievers and another for believers.

Unbelievers will face judgment at the end of time before the “great white throne” of God (Revelation 20:11). In this judgment, death and Hades will release the dead for judgment; if anyone’s name is not found written in the Book of Life—that is, if anyone has not received Jesus’ gift of salvation—that person will be “thrown into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:13-15). The judgment of unbelievers results in eternal condemnation.

Believers will be judged at “the judgment seat” of God (Romans 14:10). Many scholars believe that this judgment will take place after the return of Christ, or after death if we die before His return. A key distinction is that this judgment does not lead to condemnation or determine one’s salvation, as salvation is based solely on faith in Christ, which the believer already has (Ephesians 2:8-9).

Instead, it is believed that this judgment will hold us to account for what we did with our life on earth, and determine the extent of our rewards in Heaven (e.g., Matthew 6:19-21).

This week, we will examine the concept of the believer’s final judgment and the specific characteristics by which Scripture says we will be evaluated. We must give an account for ourselves before God as citizens of Heaven, disciples of Christ, servants to our neighbours, and as new creations in Christ.

Men, this is a challenging topic, and we feel judged every day. But let’s persevere and stay the course for the week on this most important matter.

Prayer: Father, we recognize that every knee will bow to You and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:9-11). Help us understand that we cannot earn our salvation; salvation is through Christ alone. Moreover, through our relationship with You, may we be continually transformed into the new creations You desire us to become. Thank You that we have no reason to fear the final judgment! Amen.

Reflection: Consider how you feel about Judgment Day. Is there anything you need to lay at the feet of Christ?
