Bible Passage: “Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts.” (Colossians 3:16)
Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:12-17
If I had five dollars for every time I heard someone say that “Church is just for women,” or that “Church doesn’t really change anyone,” I’d be wealthy.
Here’s the truth:
Church is for men.
It’s for women, too, absolutely. But when you look closely at what happens in a church service, you’ll see that everything is designed to help men build godly character.
Church calls us to live for a purpose higher than ourselves. It demands that we channel our strength to serve others, to lay down our lives in sacrificial love, humble service, and fierce protection of those who need it.
When we walk through the doors of a church, we’re making a statement about what really matters. When we sing, we remind ourselves what’s most important. Have you ever heard what it sounds like when men truly sing?
There’s nothing like it.
But singing is just the beginning. We pray together. We read Scripture. We listen carefully to biblical preaching, bringing our lives under the authority of God’s Word. And we build authentic relationships with other men who are pursuing the same goal.
Yesterday, we explored the importance of Christian fellowship: how we need other men if we’re going to grow spiritually.
Today I have a related challenge:
Show up for church every Sunday.
Make it a priority. Lean into every part of it. Sing loudly. Laugh. Pray. Read. Wrestle with Scripture. Then come back and do it again, week after week.
This will change your life. And if you take it seriously, you’ll probably end up changing the lives of others, too.
The godliest men I know show up in a big way. Take church seriously, and it will be one of the most powerful tools you have for building godly character.
Prayer: Father, help me to make church a priority in my life. Amen.
Reflection: How can you show up intentionally for church this week?
