Bible Passage: “She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial.” (Mark 14:8 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Matthew 26:6-16; John 12:1-8; Psalm 51:17
Midweek of Passion Week moves quietly, yet it reveals two contrasting hearts.
A woman pours costly perfume on Jesus in an act of sacrificial love, while Judas begins plotting betrayal.
Both are close to Christ, yet their devotion leads in opposite directions. Proximity and posture are not the same thing.
Men often measure faith by visible achievement. This woman offers something unseen, intimate, costly. Jesus defends her act, showing that true worship flows from love rather than public recognition. The actions others were judging, He was welcoming.
Judas, on the other hand, allows hidden motives to grow unchecked. Betrayal rarely begins with a single decision. It grows slowly through compromise, resentment, or disappointment. Spiritual drift crouches at the door of every man’s heart. Passion Week calls us to examine our inner life:
Are we nurturing devotion or drifting toward spiritual numbness?
Hidden devotion shapes visible faithfulness. The woman’s act symbolically prepares Jesus for burial, though she may not fully grasp its significance at the time. Her love moves her to action. In the same way, a man’s daily obedience may feel small, yet God uses it in ways we cannot see.
Christ honors sacrifices that flow from love. He notices what others overlook. For men who feel unseen or uncelebrated, this story from Passion Week reminds us that faithfulness matters deeply to Jesus and that He sees everything.
The contrast between devotion and betrayal invites honest reflection. Every man chooses daily which path to walk. Love that costs something reveals where our hearts truly rest.
Prayer: Jesus, guard my heart from hidden compromise. Teach me to love You with costly, sincere devotion. Amen.
Reflection: What private choices today are shaping the direction of your faith?
