Theme of the Week: Raising Godly Kids
Bible Verse: These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:6-7
Scripture Reading: Deuteronomy 6:1-25
A number of years ago, we had a friend over for supper. As she watched us around the table, she told us that what she saw was not normal.
What were we doing?
Sitting together, sharing our day and our lives together. It wasn’t rocket science. It was simply connecting around our stories and our food.
In Deuteronomy 6, Moses instructs the people of Israel to pass their faith on to the next generation. And how were they to do that?
These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:6-9)
In other words, bring God conversations into your everyday life!
In our society, what’s normal is not always beneficial. So how do we do this? We need to capitalize on the key moments we are given.
- Eat supper together at the table.
- Turn off the TV and play games or get outside together.
- Have a device-free time at home or in the restaurant.
- Tuck your kids in at night.
- Talk in the car as you drive them to school or to sports.
I say this knowing that each family has its own set of circumstances. But I would bet that each family has natural opportunities to connect. We just need to see them and use them.
The key is to find ways to be abnormal to our culture in our homes.
Prayer: Jesus, Thank You for my kids. Help me to see and invest in the times You give me with them. Amen.
Reflection: Read Deuteronomy 6:1-25 and think about the natural moments you can have with your kids to have God-talks.
