Everybody Has Something to Learn

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Theme of the Week: Why Church?

Bible Verse: Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance. Titus 2:2

Scripture Reading: Titus 2:1-15

My dad died when he was 62. Way too young. He loved God deeply. He used to say, “The more I know about God, the more I realize I don’t know about God and the more I want to know about God.”

He was a man of the Word and spent a lot of time reading the Bible. But he also was a busy plumber with a full schedule. He didn’t have the luxury (though I know he would have loved it) of spending hours of time in the Bible, studying and contemplating it.

There were others whose vocation and calling led them to do that, and whose financial needs were taken care of by that profession. We had many pastors come through our church in my younger years. Men who were employed by the church to be able, as Peter and the other disciples were, to give their attention to prayer and the ministry of the Word (Acts 6).

Coming together every week to hear the pastor teach the Word of God was truly a blessing. And while it is true that with streaming services you can listen to some of the best Bible teachers in the world, it is also true that the Lord Jesus has specific things to say to your local congregation that a streaming speaker can’t possibly know about. God uses local pastors to speak to local church families.

You don’t want to miss out on either the general teaching of the Scriptures or the specific word that our Master might want to say to you.

Of course, you can also learn on your own, there’s no doubt about that. But when we learn together in community, our ideas get put to the test of other disciples of Jesus; keeping us from going astray in our thinking.

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for those who have the time and the space to dedicate to learning Scripture and to share that with me. Help me to respect the pastor and teacher in my life. Give me the humility to learn from others.

Reflection: This week, ask God to help you listen to your pastor’s sermon or group study time with an open mind and to hear those things that cause you to grow, not those things you disagree with.
