Exploring “Holiness”

In Daily Devotional by Jacques Van Dyk

Bible Verse: Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord. Hebrews 12:14 NIV

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 12:14 – 17 NIV

This week, we are exploring “holiness.”

Holiness is a concept in the Bible that is often misunderstood. Many people consider it one of God’s most prominent attributes, but it is not always clear how we mere mortals can achieve it. According to today’s verse, no one can see the Lord without holiness.

This suggests that we must be holy to be in God’s presence.

On the one hand, we should not try to add anything to the offer of salvation by grace through faith that Christ has given us (Ephesians 2:8-9). When we strive for greater holiness, are we attempting to add something that we were never meant to in the first place? In Ecclesiastes 7:16-18, Solomon advises us not to be too self-righteous or too wise and reminds us that those who fear God will avoid all extremes.

The main question we are trying to answer this week is how to achieve holiness without relying on good deeds or effort.

As we go, we will examine the definitions of holiness according to both the world and Scripture. After that, we will compare holiness and righteousness, exploring ways to increase our holiness. Finally, we will discuss the benefits of being holy.

I hope this deep dive into holiness will increase your understanding and impact your spiritual journey.

Prayer: Father, I pray that we may discern how to be more holy through faith in Christ. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection: Consider how “holiness” is defined in the world. Does it have a positive connotation for you or a negative one? Why do you think that is?
