Bible Passage: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 NIV)
Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:6-8
This week, we are going to be talking about one of my favourite things:
Serving.
Serving is a pivotal characteristic of our Master, Jesus. Since this was so important to Him, and since He served better than anyone else ever has or will, it is critical that men know what He was talking about.
What did Jesus say about serving?
What does serving look like?
Is serving optional for the disciple of Jesus?
I don’t know if you ever saw that cartoon of Jesus sitting under a tree, teaching. He says, “So this one time me and Peter were playing basketball and he said, ‘Yo, Jesus, you just got served’. Then I said, ‘The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve.’ And after that, I totally won.”
This, of course, is not what Jesus was talking about when He said He had come to serve.
Let’s look at the rest of the verse that the comic referenced.
“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
Serving, to Jesus, meant laying down His life to meet the needs of the people He loved.
This, in fact, was the purpose of His coming.
I bet most men would consider it arrogant and rude to walk into a room and expect to be served (though I have met men who act that way). That kind of attitude would go against everything it means to be a Christ-follower.
But I might also venture to guess that most men miss the full scope of Jesus’ true intention for serving.
To walk into a room and not expect to be served is only halfway there.
If we follow the Jesus Way, when we walk into a room, we understand that our purpose for being there is to serve those in that room.
May our Lord continue to transform us to be servants like He is.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, you know my tendency to desire importance. I do want people to do things for me. Help me to be more like You. Help me to see that my purpose in this life is to serve the people around me. Thank You for serving me and for dying on the Cross that I might have eternal life. There is no one more humble and generous than You. I love You. Amen.
Reflection: On a scale of 1-10, with “I want to be served” on the one end and “I am here to serve” on the other, where would you place yourself? What might Jesus want to say to you about that?
