It’s What Disciples Do

In Daily Devotional by Tim Bergmann

Bible Passage: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 2:3-5 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Colossians 1:24-28

Likely, a lot of you men have trained guys under you. You have been at your job for a while and are good at what you do. Either you or the company you work for brings in a new guy to help carry the load, and it is on you to help them learn the ropes.

I wouldn’t be surprised if you have encountered rookies who seem to think that they know everything right away. In the best-case scenario, they are just eager and naive; in the worst-case scenario, they are arrogant and unteachable.

I have had to train guys, too. Knowing what I knew about the job I was doing, it was important that I showed the new guy exactly what was expected of him. When he veered off the path a bit, it was my job to correct him. The work needed to be done to a certain standard and in a certain way for it to be acceptable.

And for him to keep his job!

If a rookie wouldn’t listen or follow the instructions, they weren’t going to last long.

As Christ-followers, we have already determined that Jesus is our Master. Jesus is our boss!

He knows the only acceptable way to do things, and He came and modelled that for us.

It doesn’t matter whether we like doing the things He does or not; since He is the one leading, we must follow His example.

Fortunately, if we follow His example and leading, we will begin to love the Jesus Way.

We will begin to love serving, to love considering others as better than ourselves, to love looking to the needs of others before our own.

Jesus is in us, and He will form this servant heart within us.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, Master, thank You for being the best boss in the world. Thank You that the plans You have for me are for my benefit. Thank You for being such an amazing servant. Help me to follow Your example. When I veer off that path and start thinking that I should be served more than I serve, forgive me, and direct me back to the true way of living. I want to be just like You! Amen.

Reflection: What would it look like in your home if you woke up each day with the mindset that the main reason you are in your family is to serve? To serve your wife, and your children, your parents, and your siblings? What might it look like for you to go to work today with the mindset that you are there to serve? That you are there to serve your employer, your employees, and your customers? That you are there to serve even your competitors?
