For the Lord

Theme of the Week: Faith and Work

Bible Verse: “Whatever you do, do it from the heart, as something done for the Lord and not for people, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.” Colossians 3:23-24

Scripture Reading: Colossians 3:22-25

We might not like it, but slavery existed in the first-century Roman world. It’s not the same as the slavery that existed in later centuries, but it was not good. But Paul knew that he was addressing slaves, and he wanted to give them practical advice on how they could serve God in their roles.

What he writes is also helpful for us, even though our situation is different.

First, he reminds us that we are ultimately working for God. We may have a boss, but our ultimate boss is God. We live to serve him. That means that we should aim to do good work even when nobody is looking, because God is.

Second, he says that we should work from the heart. In other words, don’t just go through the motions. Give it your best. Work with enthusiasm.

Finally, he tells us that we’ll receive a reward for our good work that goes beyond a bonus or dividend. God notices our hard work and will reward it, even if nobody else notices.

Our work does more than pay the bills. It’s not just for our employer or ourselves. Our work glorifies God. He cares about our work, calls us to do our best, and promises that he will reward our work, even if nobody else notices.
