Gradual Miracles

In Daily Devotional by Alan Wachob

Bible Verse: They came to Bethsaida, and some people brought a blind man and begged Jesus to touch him. He took the blind man by the hand and led him outside the village. When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” He looked up and said, “I see people; they look like trees walking around.” Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened, his sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly. Mark 8:22–25 NIV

Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:7-8; Hebrews 12:1-2; James 5:16

Jesus’ healing miracles were not always instantaneous. Sometimes, they were gradual and happened over a period of time or in stages.

While we all like things done fast, when we ask God for a miracle, we must leave the timing with Him.

Mark 8:22-25 tells us about a gradual miracle where a man was healed in two stages.

A blind man was brought to Jesus. This is always the first crucial step in a miracle by the hand of Jesus: locate Jesus and make your way to Him. We do this today by reading the Scriptures about Jesus, hearing truth preached about Him, and approaching Him in prayer, praise, or worship. Sometimes, it’s as simple as asking someone to pray for you (James 5:16).

Jesus laid His hands on the blind man and asked if he could see anything. He could, but only partially. His sight was not completely clear yet.

Jesus laid His hands on him a second time, and his eyes were fully opened—his eyesight was restored, and he could see everything clearly.

Never give up on a partial miracle or one that is gradual. Believe that God’s power is still working in you. Let Jesus finish what He started (Philippians 1:6).

Sometimes (not always), miracles come in stages. This man would have missed his complete miracle if he had given up between the first and second stages. Instead, he was patient with the Lord’s miracle-working power.

Guys, we sometimes exit off a highway early to avoid traffic or find a shortcut when we’re in a hurry. When Jesus is working on your miracle, don’t get in a hurry. Stay with Him, and don’t rush to look for an exit.

Too often, we get impatient with the “stages” of a miracle in our lives. We see something partially…but not the full picture yet. We know God has begun to move supernaturally, but more still needs to happen. Choose to stay put while He is working and keep trusting Him. Allow God to do the miracle He wants in His way and timing.

When we stay focused on Jesus and rest in His care, the reward is always worth the wait. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the Lord touching you a second time, so He can finish what He started.

Prayer: Father, forgive me for the times I gave up too soon on a miracle You were working out in my life. Teach me to be patient in the days ahead and trust Your timing and ways for blessing my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reflection: Get your own faith in motion for a miracle by locating Jesus in your life, and then stick with Him. Do you walk away while God is still working? Learn to stay faithful to God and allow Him to finish what He’s begun. Be patient through all the stages of your miracle. When you are tempted to take an early exit, say, “God is still working, and I trust Him.”
