Hold Your Breath and Let Go

In Daily Devotional by Brad Klassen

Bible Verse: By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had embraced the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, even though God had said to him, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.”  Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death. Hebrews 11:17-19

Scripture Reading:  Genesis 22; Hebrews 11:8-19

Have you ever had to let go of something you truly loved?

Genesis 22 is a powerful passage.

For years, Abraham has held on to God’s promise of a son from his own bloodline. Then, when it happens, God asks him to lay Isaac down on the altar.

Can you imagine? You have waited decades for this son. Then he arrives. And you are asked to give him up!

I don’t know if I would have gotten up as early as Abraham did and journeyed out.

But it wasn’t the first time Abraham followed the calling of God. Hebrews 11 reminds us that he was called to move. So he moved. He was called to make his home in a strange land. So he pitched his tents. He was called to be a dad in his old age. So he loved Sarah.

What a legacy.

In all of it, Abraham built his legacy through his faithfulness. And it was through his story that God told His own story about how one day His Son would be born in an impossible way and laid down on the ultimate altar.

Abraham wasn’t perfect, and I am not trying to justify his choices with Hagar. I mean, which of us hasn’t tried to do things our own way?

But, interestingly, his legacy in Hebrews 11 recounts his faithfulness, not his mistakes.

We all have dreams and aspirations for our lives. But are we willing to hold those with an open hand, or even lay them down if God calls us to and simply trust Him?

In doing so, are we willing to walk faithfully every day, no matter where we are, and watch as God’s story is told through our faithfulness?

Then, when God calls us to do something big or scary, we can hold our breath, let go, step out in faithfulness, and trust Him wherever He leads us.

To be honest, I have not always done this well. But our legacy is built through faithfulness, not perfection.

Prayer: Lord, thank You for Your grace in my life. Help me to walk faithfully with You wherever You place me today. Amen.

Reflection: What is something God is asking you to hold with an open hand? Talk to Him about it. Talk to another Christian friend about it. See what God will do as you trust Him.
