How Do We Make a Real Difference?

In Daily Devotional by Jacques Van Dyk

Bible Verse: “And the Lord replied, ‘A faithful, sensible servant is one to whom the master can give the responsibility of managing his other household servants and feeding them.’ ” Luke 12:42-44

Scripture Reading: Acts 20:28-38

Men, before we look at how we can make a real difference in stewarding God’s Creation, we need to understand that caring for the world is not a “liberal” concept or a political mandate but a command from God, given to mankind at the very beginning (Genesis 1:28-30).

When we draw closer to God, we respect all His creation, including other humans and everything else created by God. We care for all people out of gratitude, thanksgiving, love, and respect because they all belong to the Creator and bear His image, and we care for all that God created because He created all things, and all things are dear to Him.

Here are some ideas on how we can make a real difference.

First, we can be vocal and active in politics—not as a conservative or liberal, but as a follower of Christ. You can’t cut yourself off from the world.

Second, we can examine how we spend our money. Let’s ensure that great deals do not come at a human or environmental cost. We can educate ourselves and our loved ones about the products we buy. If we are informed, we can be wise consumers.

Third, we can do things like purchase locally-grown produce. It reduces transportation costs and pollution, and it supports the local economy. We can choose wisely in our purchases wherever we can. Using greener products helps the environment, as such products are made with the environment in mind.

Lastly, we can stand against greed and work for justice. Greed easily infiltrates our society and governments and threatens to damage God’s Creation. Jesus asked us to be different. In Romans 12:2, we are told, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Prayer: Father, grant us the courage to stand up against any injustice that harms Your Creation. Let us be proactive in our actions. Amen.

Reflection: Is there an environmental issue in your community that you can support and work towards resolving?
