Why This Matters

In Daily Devotional by Jacques Van Dyk

Bible Verse: Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. James 1:17

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 5:13-20

As God’s image bearers, we are responsible and privileged to care for His Creation. As Christian men, our motivation lies in prioritizing what is important to God.

Christian men follow Christ and Scripture, not politics or worldly views. As proclaimed in Colossians 3:23-24, “Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people.” We are called to live counter-culturally, where our actions and behaviour are different from those who do not accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour.

If we follow the greatest commandment, which is to love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength and love our neighbours as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31), it becomes our responsibility to take care of the earth. Neglecting our environment can lead to consequences for mankind, including more pollution, diseases, famine, refugees, and other issues. To care for Creation is to love our neighbour well.

If we are good stewards of His Creation, we humble ourselves before God. We accept God as the owner of our lives, like how we accept God as the owner of the environment. God owns and is in control of everything. I love the quote from Charles Stanley: “Live a godly life and leave these consequences to Him.”

When we humble ourselves and acknowledge God’s rightful place in our lives, we open ourselves to His divine intervention and guidance to help us navigate life on Earth. God is our guide and shows us how to care for His Creation and our fellow human beings. He has bestowed upon us unique gifts that we can use to glorify Him and care for His world.

Prayer: Our heavenly Father, we asked for Your divine guidance to help us use our unique gifts to care for Your beautiful Creation. Amen.

Reflection: Which of your unique gifts can you use to steward the environment better?
