I Will Submit to You

In Daily Devotional by Kevin and Stacey Weeks

Theme of the Week: Marriage Celebration

Bible Verse:  “Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord.” Ephesians 5:22, CSB

Scripture Reading: Ephesians 5:15-33

Notice what word is not in this command. “if”. There is no “if.” Scripture doesn’t say submit if…

  • … your husband is right.
  • … you agree with him.
  • … he does his part.
  • … he loves you like he loves the Lord.
  • … I yield.
  • … I surrender.
  • … With humility.
  • … Through confession and forgiveness.
  • Under the pretense of fairness, being right, and wanting what is mine, I have failed to submit the way God requires. How much more would Christ have been glorified if I had kept silent, offered support, or refused to dwell on failure?

Ladies, our husbands may retreat from leadership in the home because we won’t yield it. They may fear not meeting our expectations, letting us down, and failure. More than criticism and guilt over their current leadership (or lack of it), our men need our prayers and our praise. They need to hear, “I will submit to you because I love Jesus.”

Men, do you love your wife the way Christ calls you too? Do you love your wife the way you love yourself (verse 28)? The sacrificial way Jesus loves the church? Willing to give your life for her? Jesus died for the church despite her flaws. He loved the church without expecting anything in return. Is that how you love your wife?
