Living Out What Jesus Has Already Done

Theme of the Week: Change Beyond Resolutions

Bible Verse: “Therefore, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, so now, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” Philippians 2:12

Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:12-18

When it comes to our salvation, we contribute nothing except, as someone’s said, the sin that made it necessary. Jesus does it all. Our salvation is all God’s work.

When it comes to our growth after salvation, we have a role to play. God empowers that change, but we must take action.

Philippians 2:12 challenges us to obey and to work out our salvation. Paul isn’t teaching that we can improve on our own power. He is suggesting that when God changes us, we can take actions in line with that change. We can obey God. We can stop doing certain things and start doing other things.

The good news: you can change! Change isn’t a matter of setting resolutions and trying to improve on your own power. Change is instead living out the change that Jesus has already made in your life. This shows up in practical ways, as Paul describes in verses 14 to 18. Stop grumbling and arguing. Live differently from others who don’t know Christ. Hold firm to the gospel.

If you’ve trusted Jesus, you can change! But you don’t change by pulling yourself up by your own bootstraps. You change by living out what Jesus has already done in making you a new person.
What command from Philippians 2:14-18 can you live out today?
