Make Every Effort

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Passage: “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with goodness, goodness with knowledge, knowledge with self-control, self-control with endurance, endurance with godliness, godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love.” (2 Peter 1:5-7 CSB)

Scripture Reading: 2 Peter 1:1-11

It seems obvious now, but it took me too long to realize that godly character doesn’t happen on its own.

I first discovered this when I looked at my own life. I’d been a Christian for a long time, yet I wasn’t growing in some important areas. I realized that I had to figure it out before too long.

I didn’t want to end up stuck in the same old patterns, getting older but not making the progress I’d hoped for. I had to face this and figure something out so that I could become the person I knew God wanted me to be.

I knew that it was important to grow godly character for my own sake, but it would also make a difference for those I love, especially my wife and kids. It would allow me to positively influence others and would bring glory to God.

I also noticed this as I looked around me. Some men had really grown and continued to grow. I wondered what they did to end up this way. Was it just their personalities? Or did they choose behaviours that led them to grow spiritually?

I don’t want to be judgmental, but some other men seemed more stuck. I couldn’t blame them because I felt like I was often like them, but I wanted to avoid staying in that category for too long.

So, I realized I had to figure this out.

What are some ways that I could build godly character into my life? That’s what we want to look at this week. Nobody grows godlier by accident. We don’t grow into godliness on our own. The Holy Spirit helps us, but we have an important role to play.

There are some important things that must happen if we’re going to grow into the godly men that God wants us to be. We’re going to explore some of these things this week and look at how we can build godly character as Christian men.

Prayer: Lord, help me to grow in godliness by the power of Your Spirit. Amen.

Reflection: What habits or patterns do you notice in men who keep growing spiritually?
