Power in Surrender

In Daily Devotional by Jamie Ramer

Theme of the Week: The Art of Surrender

Bible Verse: ‘If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.’ Luke 9:23

Scripture Reading: Luke 9:22-27, 1 Corinthians 1:17-18

Let’s just be honest about this from the top.

Never giving up or surrendering is a quality that many of us men admire and even aspire to. Whether it be on the sports field or the battlefield we have heard many stories that inspire us to keep going battle through whatever challenges or obstacles we are facing.

I have grown up in the Canadian hockey culture and was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to play several seasons in Europe. I recall one time when I had a teammate tell me we were going to lose the game we were playing the next day. He told me it was because they had better skilled players than us. My cultural Canadian upbringing had a challenging time understanding this. I would never surrender an outcome before the final buzzer went! I am sure many of you resonate with this.

This becomes a very significant thing for us to wrestle through as men when it comes to our faith. The starting place and call of Jesus on our lives is the daily surrender of him with our lives as we take up our own cross and follow him.

It feels contrary to how we might otherwise want to respond but faith flips things upside down. Jesus’ power and strength came through his complete obedience and surrender to the Father.
In fact, He broke the power of sin in the world through His willingness to take up a cross.

What could God do in our lives, families and communities if we truly understood the art of daily surrender?
