Saved from the Power of Sin

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Theme of the Week: Salvation

Bible Verse: “For we know that our old self, was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be rendered powerless so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, since a person who has died is freed from sin.” Romans 6:6-7

Scripture Reading: Romans 6:1-14

Salvation means that we’re forgiven, but it means a lot more. It also means that we’re set free not just from the penalty of sin but also from the power of sin.

You may be thinking, “It doesn’t feel like it!” That’s because we’re still tempted by sin. Unlike before, though, we don’t have to give in. Sin will still try to overpower us, but we’re now out of its grasp. We just need to remember this when tempted.

Sometimes I wait by the elevator in my condo when a dog starts growling and barking. A couple of times I’ve jumped. It feels like I’m about to get attacked. But then I remember that the dog is behind a locked door and can’t touch me. And it’s not even a big dog anyway!

Sin is like that. It will still make a lot of noise and try to get us to give into it, but we don’t have to. We don’t have to listen to it anymore because it no longer has any power over us. Jesus delivers us from the power of sin.

Prayer: Lord, help me to remember that sin no longer has any power over me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection: Why does sin sometimes feel so powerful, even though Jesus has defeated sin?
