Solid Through-and-Through

In Daily Devotional by Alan Wachob

Bible Verse: Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:1–2

Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:3-6; Philippians 2:12-18

This will be a week-long devotional about authentic Christianity.

In today’s world, we are surrounded by posers, fakes, and cheap counterfeits. Jesus has something better for us as Christians. He wants us to develop a genuine relationship with Him, something liveable, lasting, and totally fulfilling.

Sometimes, things will appear to be something they are really not. I have different kinds of furniture in my house, probably like most of you. Some of it is made from real wood, solid through-and-through. It’s heavier to move and has likely been around a long time—maybe it’s an heirloom.

But I also have other types of furniture, the kind you must assemble yourself after bringing them home in flat boxes. These are much cheaper to buy and fill a room with and much lighter to move around. But they are fake underneath. They have a wooden finish on the outside that looks real, but on closer examination, you’ll notice it’s a thin piece of laminate glued on top of particle board or MDF. That’s why it’s lighter, cheaper, and something you can put together in a few minutes. It also has a much shorter lifespan, so it likely won’t be the piece that gets handed down to your grandkids one day.

God does not want us to be wobbly, fake Christians who are all about appearances but have nothing solid underneath. When close examinations come, like tests or temptations, we shouldn’t fall apart or fall away. Since quality and authenticity take time, Jesus wants to take some time with you. Can you handle that?

You were not meant to put yourself together as a Christian DIY project. Let’s start at the only place authentic faith can truly start – in Jesus Christ Himself. In Hebrews 12:1-2, Jesus is called the author and pioneer of our faith, as well as the perfecter and completer of our faith. His work in us begins at salvation but continues throughout our lives. He never stops working in us to make us spiritually solid, through-and-through.

Prayer: Father, I want to be solid and long-lasting in my faith. I invite Jesus’ voice and authority to challenge every part of my life. Thank You for never giving up on me but continuing to work in me. Make me more authentic in my relationship with You. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reflection: Authenticity for the Christian begins with Jesus and His work of grace in us. When challenges come our way, we must choose an authentic faith over a cheap substitute. Be honest and ask yourself whether you are more concerned with appearances or with truly letting Jesus develop and strengthen your life.
