Step by Step

Bible Passage: “Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.” (Galatians 5:25 NIV)

Scripture Reading: Psalm 143:10; Isaiah 48:17; Romans 8:14

Walking in the Spirit is not a single discipline. It is a way of life. Step by step. Moment by moment.

Keeping in step implies attentiveness. The Spirit leads, but He does not drag. He guides men who are listening. He shapes men who are willing.

Walking in the Spirit means slowing down enough to notice conviction, invitation, warning, and comfort. Sometimes the Spirit shouts, but most often He whispers, so men have to conduct and carry themselves in such a way as to be postured to hear Him.

Walking in the Spirit means responding quickly when the Spirit prompts and repenting quickly when we resist. I’ve noticed that often the Lord stirs my heart to go spend time with Him when I’m least expecting it. If that happens to you, do not resist—respond. He is inviting you to commune with Him. Never let yourself become too busy to drop everything and get alone with God.

The regular, daily walking in the Spirit is not always spectacular. It’s faithful. Over time, the Spirit produces Christlikeness that cannot be faked. As A.W. Tozer said, “The Spirit-filled life is not a special, deluxe edition of Christianity. It is part and parcel of the total plan of God for His people.”

The goal is not mastery of some sort of Spiritual super-skill; the goal is companionship. Not perfection, but direction.

To walk in the Spirit is to live before God, with God, and by God, until Christ is fully formed in us.

Prayer: Spirit of God, lead me. Teach me to walk closely, humbly, and faithfully with You. Amen.

Reflection: What would it look like today to keep in step with the Spirit?
