The Benefits of Holiness

In Daily Devotional by Jacques Van Dyk

Bible Verse: But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. Romans 6:22 NIV

Scripture Reading: Galatians 5:22-26 NIV

Increased holiness leads to blessings beyond our comprehension.

The first benefit of increased holiness is that we are at peace with our Creator. As Hebrews 12:14 proclaims, “Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness, no one will see the Lord.” Jesus Christ reconciled us with the Father through His sacrifice, and through His sacrifice, we became holy people. Scripture says, “You also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.” 1 Peter 2:5

The second benefit of increased holiness is intimacy with God and spiritual maturity. We are called to a higher purpose, and God wants to be part of the inner details of our lives. However, to have a real intimate relationship, we need to be holy because God is holy and cannot change His character. We need to be holy to be in God’s holy presence. The Bible teaches, “It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.” 1 Corinthians 1:30 NIV

The third benefit of increased holiness is that our holy living makes us valuable and productive for God’s Kingdom. As proclaimed in 2 Timothy 2:21, “Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for particular purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.” We must remember that we fit into God’s plans, not vice versa. God uses the holy for His purpose and glory.

The fourth benefit of increased holiness is that it produces good fruit. We are changed, and we influence people around us who are changed, and they, in turn, glorify God. Only holiness can make a fundamental change in us and others. As stated in Ephesians 1:4, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.”

Prayer: Father, help us understand that nothing in this world can replace being holy and in Your presence. We are thankful that we no longer need to go through mediators to be in Your holy presence. Your Son has made us holy through His sacrifice. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Reflection: Ask God and the Holy Spirit to show you where more holiness is needed in your life. Is there something that you need to surrender to God?
