The Full Image of God

In Daily Devotional by Kirk Giles

Bible Verse: “The one who has seen me has seen the Father.” John 14:9 CSB

Scripture Reading: John 1:1-17; John 14:9; Colossians 1:15-20

What do you see when you look in the mirror?

When you look past the morning fog and messy hair – what do you see?

Do you see the image of God?

The Bible teaches us many different realities of who Jesus is. In today’s Scripture reading, we see the Deity of Jesus. He is both fully God and fully human. The Son of God has always existed – all things were created by Him and for Him.

He also was born a boy in a specific time and place and grew to become a man.

There are many reasons why the Son of God became a human, but one is to help us see and experience what God is like. Jesus said that the one who saw Him also saw the Father. Paul describes Jesus as the “image of the invisible God” (Colossians 1:15).

That word should sound familiar to you. The book of Genesis teaches that you are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). Your life has inherent value and purpose – you are created to give all of Creation a glimpse of what God is like.

But as men, you and I have failed to live up to this calling. Jesus, the man, does what the rest of us could not do: He is the perfect human expression of the image of God.

Jesus was sent on a rescue mission to forgive you of your sins and renew the image of God in you. When Jesus calls us to “follow Him,” He is calling you and me to learn from and imitate Him because He knows what it means to be a man made in the image of God. In Romans 8:29, we are taught these words: “For those He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son…”

By calling you to follow Him, Jesus is working in your life to restore you to the man you were always created to be: a man made in the image of God.

Follow Jesus – and there you will find your ultimate purpose in life: to be a man who reveals the image of God in you wherever you go.

Prayer: God, help me see how Jesus is the perfect image of who You are and help me be a man being shaped more and more into the image of Jesus. Amen.

Reflection: In what ways do your strengths reveal the image of God in you? What weaknesses do you have that show where you need to conform more to the image of Jesus?
