The Influence of Forgiveness

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Bible Verse: And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Matthew 6:13-15

Scripture Reading: Luke 23:34; Matthew 18:21-22

Forgiveness is something we are commanded to do.

The Bible tells us that if we don’t forgive others, God can’t forgive us. We know forgiveness is not easy sometimes. To forgive someone is not saying that what they did was right. Instead, it’s a choice not to let the offence get in the way of your relationship with God and others.

My friend has often said that unforgiveness is like drinking poison, hoping the other person gets sick. Unforgiveness only hurts you. So, it’s to your benefit to forgive.

But how does forgiveness increase your influence?

When we offer forgiveness to others, it does many things, but here are two for you to consider:

1. Forgiving brings healing to the one you’re forgiving. It can start the process of relational reconciliation and restoring trust. It can be a long process, but there are no relational steps forward without forgiving.

It also unburdens them, bringing emotional health. There are few things worse than regret for hurting someone and having them not forgive you. Forgiving helps them and you with emotional healing.

2. Forgiving inspires others to do the same. Sometimes, it just takes someone taking the first step to forgiveness, which creates a domino effect of even more forgiveness. Acts of forgiveness can profoundly affect individuals and even communities to leave bitterness and resentment for reconciliation and compassion. It can also break this culture’s cycle of hurt and retaliation.

Forgiveness is the most essential act of influence in some cases. Let’s not run from it but face it head-on like men and be a humble example to others around us.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, by Your Holy Spirit, search me and know me (Psalm 139:23). Look into my life to see if I am carrying any offence. Please give me the strength to forgive and the humility to ask for forgiveness. Thank You for always forgiving me. I know that I am accepted and loved by You. Amen.

Reflection: Is there someone you need to forgive? Is there someone you need to ask forgiveness from? Have you asked the Lord these questions?
