The Most Influential Man in History

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Bible Verse: As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him. Matthew 4:18-20 (NIV)

Scripture Reading: Mark 3:13-16; Matthew 16:24-26

In all recorded history, it would be hard to argue that there is any man more influential than Jesus Christ.

From humble beginnings in the town of Bethlehem to the punishing hill of Golgotha to the triumphant resurrection from the grave, His life and ministry revealed a divine purpose that has transcended time and culture.

Jesus was a model of grace, compassion, and truth. His powerful teachings challenged the culture of His day and continue to provoke ours just as profoundly 2000 years later.

These teachings encourage men to live lives of humility, love, compassion, forgiveness, and righteousness. His parables echo through the corridors of time with lasting wisdom, providing a road map to steer through life’s complexities.

How Jesus lived His life also calls us forth as an invitation to do the same.

He made the sick whole and fed the hungry. He forgave the repentant while also standing against injustice. He was radical love exemplified that knew no limits, going to the marginalized, the broken, and the lost, with the most powerful display of His influence revealed by His sacrificial death and victorious resurrection.

Through the centuries, numerous men have been inspired by the life and influence of Jesus Christ.

Are we included in that number?

In 2013, Time Magazine called Jesus the most influential man in history. Are we curious to know what made Him so influential?

There is an invitation to journey this week to rediscover what made Jesus a man of influence whom we can emulate.

“Come follow me,” He is whispering to us today. What are we waiting for?

Prayer: Dear Jesus, my desire today is to be more like You than I was yesterday. Help me to walk in Your ways, obey Your teaching and think more like You. Help me to be influential like You were and see Your plans and purposes fulfilled in my life. Amen.

Reflection: What do you think makes men influential in our world? Would they be things that Jesus participated in?
