The Power of a Renewed Mind

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Theme of the Week: Living Victoriously

Bible Verse: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” Romans 12:2 NIV

Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:5, 1 Corinthians 10:5, Colossians 3:2-3

“Sow a thought, reap an action, Sow and action, reap a habit,
Sow a habit, reap a character, Sow a character, reap a destiny.”

I heard that quote early in ministry, and it has stuck with me. Our future is tied to our thinking. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) says “Above all else, guard your heart for it determines the course of your life.” The term “heart” in Hebrew culture was considered the ‘seat of thought’, and so that’s what the original audience would have understood when they read this. King Solomon is giving his best advice here, telling us that you can’t have a sick heart (unhealthy mindset) and a healthy future.

The Apostle Paul, hundreds of years later, echoes that sentiment. Read what he had to say in Romans 12:2 (NIV) “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.” Transformative power and victorious living must have a healthy thinking present for the believer.

To see our victory in Christ continue, we must win the war in our hearts and minds. And, like we’ve been learning all week, we can do it because of Jesus!

Here are four quick things to help you with a renewed mind:

  1. Read the Bible. Fill your mind with God’s thoughts. (Colossians 3:2-3)
  2. Take every thought captive that is contrary to the Bible. (1 Corinthians 10:5)
  3. Pray for the mind of Christ. (Philippians 2:5)
  4. Renewing our minds means unlearning unhealthy thought patterns. (Romans 12:2)

All these things are helpful to me. If you give them a try, I know they will work for you as well!

Prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for giving me power to overcome unhealthy mindsets. Help me to walk in integrity, health, and wholeness in my inner world. Help me to have your thoughts today.

Reflection: Do you have any unhealthy thinking in your mind? What changes do you need to make to find health in your thinking? Who can hold you accountable to that?
