In English, it’s hard to tell the difference between you singular and you plural. It depends on the context.
But in the Bible, most of the commands given to you were not given to an individual. They were given to a group of people.
That’s why I think we could benefit from a Bible that makes use of the Southern term “y’all.” It might help correct the tendency to think that we’re supposed to figure out the Christian life on our own.
God designed you to grow in relationship with other believers.
So, in general, look for ways to grow with other people. That’s where a good church can come in handy. It will offer different ministries and initiatives you can join to help you grow. Look for opportunities and take them. As you do so, you can count on encouragement and accountability from others to help keep you on track.
North American society encourages men to live as rugged individuals. But the Bible encourages us to lean on others for strength and support. Resist the North American model and embrace the biblical model of practicing disciplines with others, not alone.
Prayer: Thank You, Lord, that I don’t have to grow alone. Amen.
