Just Keep Going

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Verse: Godliness is beneficial in every way, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 1 Timothy 4:8

Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 4:6-10

Life is busy. We can devise all kinds of excuses to not practice spiritual disciplines.

But practicing disciplines is essential and brings lasting benefits. The disciplines remind us we’re meant for more than a comfortable life. Only God can satisfy.

Some disciplines matter more: Bible reading, worship, and joining a smaller group in the church. We can also build the discipline of talking to God in prayer about what’s going on in our lives and then experiment with adding other disciplines as well. Don’t try to build these disciplines alone. Get help from others.

But here’s the important thing: just keep going. When you miss a day, just keep going. When you find it hard, just keep going. When you get discouraged, just keep going.

We tend to focus on our mistakes. When building spiritual disciplines, it is better to focus on what’s working.

What works, and how can you do more of that?

Trust me: everyone I know who is growing spiritually has built these spiritual disciplines into their lives. But they’re called “disciplines” for a reason. There are times when it will take discipline to do them. When that’s the case, just keep going.

And trust that God will meet you as you practice these disciplines and that they will make a difference in your life both now and forever.

Prayer: Lord, help me to just keep going with these disciplines, even when it’s hard and even when I fail. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Reflection: What are some ways to keep you going even when you feel like giving up?
