Bible Verse: “The most important command is…love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” Mark 12:29-30
Scripture Reading: Mark 12:28-34 & Luke 4:4-8
Imagine someone telling you that the most important thing you can do with your life is love and worship them above all else. This is precisely what God says to you. Don’t let this be a passing thought. According to Jesus, this is to be the all-consuming aim of your life. Even as you are reading this devotional, take a moment to stop and think about the weight of God commanding you to love him and worship him above all else.
Each week, you have 168 hours to live your life. How much of your week is given to any thought of loving God, honouring him, or serving Him? There are so many great things in life, and it is easy for God to be an add-on or completely forgotten.
When Jesus was asked the question of the most critical command in the Bible, His answer was to love God with every part of who you are. When you go to work today, love God. When you stream your favourite show or listen to your favourite podcast, love God. Love God when you make financial decisions or determine what will fill your calendar. Love God when you listen to music or hang out with your family and friends.
This week, so many things will try to win the affection and attention of your heart. You will face urgent circumstances and opportunities that feel too good to pass up. Each can distract from where your worship is meant to be directed. Even Jesus experienced this. In the wilderness, Jesus was tempted to redirect His worship, and He would receive the power to rule all the world’s kingdoms. But He responded to the devil by saying, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve,” (Luke 4:8).
If someone commands you to love them and worship them above all else – they better be able to back it up. This week, we will explore God’s character to understand why God is worth your love and worship above all else.
Prayer: God, help me see You for who You are this week. Help me to see why You are worthy of my love and worship above all else.
Reflection: Today, be intentional to think about what it looks like to love God in every moment of your day and see how this changes your attitude and decisions throughout the day.
