Your Wallet Reveals Your Heart

In Daily Devotional by Jordan Harnum

Theme of the Week: Stewardship

Bible Verse: For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:21

Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:1-34

Jesus said more about money than any other topic. Nearly 15% of His words were dedicated to the topic of wealth in some way. Clearly, finances were a concern for Him.

In Church circles, we typically don’t like to talk much about money. Perhaps it’s because it’s one of the areas that hurt the most when exposed to the shaping and pruning of sanctification.

Our finances, and the way we steward them, are closely tied to who we are as people and what we are passionate about. Larry Burkett said, “You can tell more about the spiritual lives of a couple by looking at their chequebook than by anything else.”

Could that be true? Is how we manage our money an indicator of our spiritual health? Jesus seems to suggest so.

In Matthew 6:19-21 He said, “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.

“Wherever your treasure is, there your heart will be also”? When I reflect on my own heart and where I spend my money, some might say the desires of my heart is all about my love for food.

Some might say that my heart is more focused on my hobbies than my Lord.

What would our lives look like if we focused on cashing in on things with an eternal purpose? What does it mean for men to store up treasures in heaven?

If your treasure reveals where your heart is, where is your heart?

Prayer: God I pray there would be an alignment in how I spend my money, and what I say that I value. May my bank records show that you are King, and that I love your church and mission. Help me to be responsible, generous, and courageous in the way I handle what you’ve given me.

Reflection: This week we have been talking about different ways to honor God with our money. Think of one simple way that you can steward the money God has given you in a greater way.
