To the Full

Theme of the Week: Out of Hibernation

Bible Verse: The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. John 10:10

Scripture Reading: John 10:1-21

The itinerary was full. And I mean full. There were no spare minutes, every moment was accounted for, and everyone was happy about it. No one wanted to waste even a single minute during what may be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It was possible to keep to the schedule, but it relied on absolutely everything going exactly according to plan. The only problem is that a single hiccup would throw everything off. It would only take one factor out of their control (of which there were many) to go wrong and the whole itinerary would need to be adjusted, at least for that day. You can probably guess how it ended. Nearly every day got “adjusted.” Everyone was good natured about it. Eventually it became a running joke where the next change would come.

Ever had anything like that happen? Something didn’t go according to plan and some adjustments had to be made? It seems to happen frequently. Life is unpredictable. And yet, we plan anyway.

We plan because efficiency is a good. Plans, timelines, and processes ensure the best results possible. We get to see and do all the things on our objectives list. Even if we know deep down that we live in a broken world with other broken people, we still want to have a life that is full and fulfilling. So, we plan.

It’s one of the things that I think I misunderstand about Jesus’s words most of the time. He said that he came to bring life, and life to the full (John 10:10). But I’m not always sure what a full like is or looks like. What did He mean by that?

At least part of it is in contrast to what the thief does: steal, kill, and destroy. Jesus then came to give, enliven, and build/create. Each of those ideas still needs a what question asked, but there is one thing that is certain, full life doesn’t come outside of Jesus. It is He who brings life and to have that full life, we must come to Him.

Plan all you want. Full life only comes with Jesus. I’m still trying to learn and live by that.

Join the rest of this week to explore some ideas about what life with Jesus is like.

Prayer: Father of Life, thank you for sending Jesus to bring us new and full life. Help me learn to live in and through Him so that I may have life to its fullest.

Reflection: How are you living in the life that Jesus brings. Is there an area you are not giving Him?
