Call Us Blessed

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Bible Verse: Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” John 20:29

Scripture Reading: John 20:1-31

I’ll be the first to confess, we have skipped over so much of John’s Gospel.

So much has been left behind in the brevity of our week. But we have seen some of what John wanted his readers to know about Jesus: His deity as the Word, His offer of forgiveness and eternal life, His exclusivity of providing the way to the Father, and His desire that we reflect Him to the world around us.

But there is one thing that all of this hinges on, and it was a concern even for His closest disciples. It brings us back to the beginning; the only way any of this applies to any of us.

We tend to look down on Thomas as someone who needed empirical evidence to believe.

And there’s some warrant to that; Jesus doesn’t exactly commend Thomas for his rational approach. On the other side of Thomas’ affirmation of Jesus as his Lord and God, Jesus says that those who have not seen—including all of us who follow Jesus since His return to heaven—and yet still believe are truly blessed.

The requirement of belief circles back around. We are faced with the question of whether or not we believe in Jesus. Does our life demonstrate that we have reached the same conclusion as Thomas? Jesus is Lord and God?

Following Jesus is a life of faith. It is a life that requires us to move on and be moved by what we cannot see. This is why Jesus calls us blessed.

We are motivated by something beyond what our senses can prove.

We do not rest on what can be demonstrated.

We are people of faith in a risen Lord who is seated in heaven, continuing to pray for us.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of the Living God. Amen.

If this is not a prayer you can pray or have ever prayed before, please reach out for more information about Jesus and what it means to follow Him!

Reflection: Have you shared Jesus with anyone recently? Make a point of helping another grow in their faith this week.
