Connected to the Power of the Spirit

In Daily Devotional by Dean Brenton

Theme of the Week: Abiding in Christ

Bible Verse: But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. John 15:26 NKJV

Scripture Reading: John 15:18-27; Acts 1:1-4; Acts 2

My morning routine includes a hot cup of strong, aromatic, spirited coffee. Most mornings, it’s French Press coffee which requires a full kettle of boiled water to start the process for that perfect cup. A few mornings ago, I filled the kettle, turned it on, and left it to do its work. When we poured the water into the press, it was unbearably cold. We realized the hard way that the kettle was unplugged and resulted in an unintended cold brew.

The last point of connection Jesus refers to in this chapter is a connection to the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus uses the word parakletos to describe the One who would be sent to his disciples. This word means “helper, advocate, or intercessor.” Now, this is good news for all of us. Having just described to his hearers in the previous verses that life and faith would have their challenges and adversities, Jesus declares that One would come to “help” us.

Help us do what?

The sending of the Paraclete is based on the sending of the Spirit from the Father by Jesus to his followers. This sending is also tied to the sending of the church into the world to accomplish the Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20). God hasn’t left us alone to accomplish this daunting mission. The Spirit is promised and sent to provide the empowerment for the mission: “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses…” (Acts 1:8 NLT).

So abiding in Christ is also tied to our mission for Christ. That mission is to share his Good News with our walk and our words, but we are not left to our own devices or abilities to do so. A helper is available. But we must stay connected to him.

Why not pray this prayer today? Come Holy Spirit, I need Thee.
