Fighting Apathy

In Daily Devotional by Jim Ramos

Theme of the Week: Climbing the Mountain of Manhood

Bible Verse: For this people’s heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them. Matthew 13:15

Scripture Reading: Matthew 7:13-14, Matthew 13:13-15

“Fighting apathy” is a bit more obscure than integrity but, you’ll agree it’s the greatest battle a man will ever fight.

More than greed, selfishness, gossip, gluttony, or indebtedness, the fight against apathy exceeds them all. Apathy is a lack of feeling that anything really matters. It’s indifference.

Like when the high school teacher asked her students to explain the difference between ignorance and apathy. One bored student half-heartedly turned to his buddy and said, “I don’t know, and I don’t care!”

I love it!

In the Bible the word most often associated with apathy is callousness. Callousness occurs when over time a part of the body becomes hardened and dulled to sensation. There are forces trying to pull men down as they climb. Sadly, effeminate churches, cultural norms, and subjective media dull us into passive apathy. Learn to relentlessly fight apathy at all costs!

If you’re a guy who lifts weights or does manual labor, you’ve probably noticed something. Over time your hands form calluses from the constant friction demanded of them. Initially, you had blisters, but over time your hands passively adapted to the constant friction; thus, a callus formed. A callus is a dead, nerveless, thickening of skin resulting from friction. Calluses on the hands are meant to protect us from pain, but when the heart becomes calloused; a man loses feeling for things that should be highly emotive.

When he fails to resist lies, he becomes apathetic, indifferent, and passive. He disengages from his marriage, ignores his children, and becomes a consumer rather than a contributor. Fighting apathy is the man that resists the forces threatening to deaden his spirit.

Fighting apathy is a daily battle and takes constant work. Don’t let life rob you of your heart, passion, and the causes you care deeply about. It’s like fighting gravity in a grueling climb up a mountain. It’s a climb that fewer men are willing to take. It’s much easier to jump off, slack off, and back off than to grind it out on the way to the top.

Too many males defer their role as a man to others. Sadly, our society doesn’t applaud a man. It presses in against him. It’s easy to take a knee, take a seat, and take it easy. But men don’t take shortcuts. They don’t coast. They commit to the climb.
