Theme of the Week: Freedom From Fear and Anxiety
Bible Verse: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. John 14:27 ESV
Scripture Reading: Joshua 1:6-9; 1 Timothy 6:11-12, 2 Thessalonians 2:16-17
An anxious mind and a fearful heart can create a spin cycle that interrupts your normal thought process. You feel caught in a centrifuge, and momentum keeps you stuck thinking about all the many reasons you are anxious and fearful. Panic sets in and feels dizzying and overwhelming!
If you have been in this cycle, you know how challenging it can be to get out of the spin—challenging, but not impossible. When it happens, the most important—and the most difficult—step to take is to stop. Take a breath and refocus. Remind yourself that God has a plan for you and that it is good. Let this truth soak in and help.
If possible, connect with someone you trust and talk through the issue until you have stopped spinning. Then create a plan for when and if it happens again. A simple phrase like “God’s got this” or “Lord, bring me peace” can interrupt the cycle and exert a powerful influence on thinking and emotions. You were created by God and God will see you through!
Prayer: God, help me to be of sound mind when I am threatened to be tossed and turned by waves of fear and anxiety. Thank you for your presence with me and your promise never to leave me.
Reflection: When was the last time you were able to experience God helping you out of a bad thought cycle? Remember that time and thank God for it.
