Let’s Rest Like Jesus

In Daily Devotional by Kyvenz Amédée

Theme of the Week: How to Make the Most of Your Sabbath Rest

Bible Verse: Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat.” Mark 6:31 NLT

Scripture Reading: Psalm 31:1-24

Out of love for us, Jesus was extremely dedicated to his ministry. Every day he would preach the good news of the kingdom, teach God’s word, heal the sick, cast out demons, forgive sinners, bless children… he would even minister on the Sabbath day, to the outrage of the religious leaders of his time, and they hated him for it.

Jesus was always on the move, always ready to glorify his Father and to serve, but he was not a workaholic. He knew when it was time to rest. And he didn’t just know he needed it, he took it! Sometimes we know we need some rest, but we still don’t take the time.

We all need a quiet place of our own to get away from the noise and the expectations of those who want something from us. The goal is not to give of yourself until you are empty and exhausted. The goal is to be a continuous blessing to those God sent you to, whether they’re at work, at school, or at home. But to be such a blessing, you must be aware of your own need for rest and take it seriously enough to actually take it. And you don’t have to take this time of resting alone. Jesus was with his disciples; they all rested together, to be a continuous blessing together.

As you consider taking some time off, think about it: are there people (family members or friends) with whom you might enjoy resting?
