Setting the Example

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Bible Verse: To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps. 1 Peter 2:21

Scripture Reading: John 1:17; 1 Corinthians 1:22-25

This week, we have focused on Jesus setting the example for men in various ways, but I thought it prudent not just to focus on what He did but also on how He did it.

So, how did Jesus set the example? What was the place that Jesus led and lived from?

Grace and Truth

Jesus’ influence struck the perfect balance between grace and truth (John 1:14). It’s also essential to notice the order. Sometimes, men focus on the truth first, and grace becomes an afterthought. Now, sometimes we may need to start with truth, but notice how often Jesus started with truth compared to the times He first extended grace to the broken and the outcast, offering forgiveness and restoration. Grace comes first.

Wisdom

Jesus was the most outstanding teacher. Matthew 7:29 says He taught with greater authority than the teachers of the day. Part of the authority people picked up on was the wisdom He spoke and lived out. He understood humanity better than anyone else, so He could talk to the complex issues of our lives with revelation and simplicity. This same wisdom is available to us men; we need only ask for it and mine it from the Word of God (James 1:5). Some of the most influential men in my life have been men of godly wisdom.

Authenticity and Integrity

Maybe the most compelling components of Jesus’ influence were His authenticity and integrity. There was genuine care in His connections with others, motivated by pure intentions as well as His unchanging commitment to right living. Men of influence must lead and live from this place. No one wants their influence sabotaged by a lack of foundation of authenticity and integrity.

Prayer: Dear Jesus, thank You for Your great example. Help me today to follow in Your footsteps, reflecting grace and truth, wisdom, authenticity, and integrity. Holy Spirit, convict my heart if I lack in any of these areas and give me Your strength and power to live and love as Jesus did! Amen.

Reflection: Who have you been harsh with that didn’t deserve it? Where do you need wisdom today? Are you living authentically with integrity? Who can help you stay on this path?
