Tabernacle

In Daily Devotional by J.R. Hudberg

Theme of the Week: Exodus

Bible Verse: “Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.” Exodus 40:34

Scripture Reading: Exodus 40:1-38

The story of God’s works in the book of Exodus ends with this incredible statement that God is now dwelling with His people. The glory of the Lord descended on the Tabernacle and filled it. God once again with humanity. This was the point of everything leading us here.

Since the Garden of Eden, God has sought to reconcile humanity to Himself. He called and chose a family that became a people. He rescued them from the bondage of slavery. He gave them His laws so they could once again be the people with whom He could dwell. God’s pursuit of humanity is so we can be with Him, live in His presence and enjoy His goodness as we were created to.

The story of Scripture, the book of Exodus, is that God sees, hears, comes to our rescue, and tells us how we can respond so that He can once again dwell with us (the meaning of the Tabernacle). The Tabernacle was built so that God could again dwell amid His people. But that wasn’t the end.

There was still no seed. The serpent’s head was not crushed. The ultimate cause of separation still forced rifts between God and His creation. Israel enjoyed a special relationship with the Creator, but His goal was the reconciliation of all people. Exodus was a start, it was the path forward, but it was not the destination. There was more to come, more bonds to loose, more people to save, more wonders to perform.

Enter an infant born to a young girl. A special infant who would succeed where Adam failed. An infant who would grow into a serpent-crushing man. A man who would offer full and final reconciliation. Do you know Jesus?

Prayer: God of history, Thank you that your story did not end until your promise was fulfilled. The serpent’s head has been crushed, and we can be reconciled to you. Thank you for my salvation. Please help me to be someone who offers your freedom to others. Amen.

Reflection: How do you continue to live out God’s salvation? Do you know anyone still in bondage who needs God’s salvation?
