The Spiritual Discipline of Church

In Daily Devotional by Darryl Dash

Bible Verse: “And let us consider one another in order to provoke love and good works, not neglecting to gather together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging each other, and all the more as you see the day approaching.” Hebrews 10:24-25

Scripture Reading: Hebrews 10:19-25

As we saw yesterday, reading the Bible is the most important spiritual discipline.

But Lifeway Research found two other disciplines that play a disproportionate role in our spiritual growth:

  1. Attending worship services.
  2. Attending a small group or some other class in the church. [1]

In other words, gathering for church services is important! Everything we do at church — singing worship songs together, hearing the Bible preached, praying, and fellowshipping — is crucial to our growth.

But we’re not just meant to sit in rows at church. We’re also meant to get to know each other in smaller contexts so we can better practice the “one another” commands of Scripture — love one another, encourage one another, and so on (e.g. John 13:33; 1 Thessalonians 5:11; etc.). We need to attend church services and build relationships with other believers.

According to Lifeway, people who read the Bible, attend church, and join a small group within the church tend to grow the most. These are the spiritual disciplines that matter.

In today’s culture, many people tend to view church attendance as optional. And many others may attend church but don’t prioritize building relationships in a smaller group.

If you want to grow, commit to showing up at church on Sundays, and then determine that you will also join a smaller group within the church. It will make a huge difference in your life.

Prayer: Lord, help me to value and practice the discipline of Church. Amen.

Reflection: Why do we tend to ignore the importance of Church?
