Reflecting on 2021

In Articles, Spiritual Growth by Mike Gordon

What kind of year was 2021 for you? Have you taken a second to look back and reflect on the year that was? For me I find by the time I get to December, I am focused on Christmas, and then straight into the New Year. I never take a second to simply review the road I just traveled.

In 2021 we went through another nationwide lockdown, the NHL had its playoffs in the summer, Canada had a federal election, cryptocurrency made some young people very rich and the world lost the likes of Hank Aaron, Larry King and comedian Norm MacDonald.

I’m embarrassed to say I have already forgotten about most of these events from 2021. When you look back on 2021, what have you already forgotten?

Here are a few things to think about as we move into 2022.

What were the top 5 highlights over the past year?

Maybe you received a promotion at work, or you went on the first family vacation in years. When it comes to men, sometimes we don’t do a great job reflecting on these moments. In fact, we can forget about them very quickly. Recently, I have been trying to learn how to take these highlights back to God, and thank him for these moments as an act of gratitude.

What was 1 low moment over the past year for you?

Maybe you lost your job, or you had relationship challenges. I understand why you wouldn’t want to take a second to reflect on the low moment because it might bring up those negative moments again. However, maybe being a few months removed from that low point, can you look back and see how God was still present in that moment of your life?

Or maybe as you look back, you can see how God was able to use that painful season to direct your steps into something new. Personally, I can look back at my dad passing away in the summer, and see God in a different light despite how challenging that season was for me. I believe there is value in us doing this exercise.

What was the most important lesson you learned in 2021?

I don’t believe any year is experienced in vain, and regardless of how eventful it was or not, there are always life lessons we can take away with us. Over the past 12 months, you gained more experience and gained new wisdom. You may have seen God in a new way or learned more about His character in a different way.

Whether it’s with your Christian walk, personal life, or professional life, is there something you are able to take into 2022 to help you succeed, grow, or strengthen your relationship with God?

These three simple questions will help you look back at the year and possibly give you a new perspective on how to process the journey you have been on. Regardless of what is on the list of highlights, or what the low points looked like, I believe this little exercise can help you stop for a moment and gain new insight from God.
