Theme of the Week: Don’t Go through Life Alone

Bible Verse: Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. Ephesians 4:15-16 ESV

Scripture Reading: Proverbs 27:17, Ephesians 4:15-16, Hebrews 10:24-25, 1 Corinthians 12:26

“You can have faith for yourself, but not by yourself.” I’ve heard this said so many times, that I’m not sure who said it first. (One of my Bible College professors used to say that “the art of originality is simply forgetting where you got it from” – So, who knows, maybe I said it first!) Regardless of where the quote originated – and I’m pretty sure it actually wasn’t from me – this phrase is worth remembering.

Over and over again, the New Testament refers to how interconnected we are as Christians, the Body of Christ. That metaphor shows up again for us in today’s scripture reading. This is such a strong comparison depicting how much we need one another in our faith. So much so, that 1 Corinthians 12:26 says “If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together.” We can’t be isolated from others if we are connected to the Body of Christ.

This metaphor also reminds us, even as we read today, “when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love” – meaning we can’t grow apart from one another. Like a foot separated from the body cannot grow, if we are separated from other Christians, we cannot grow. Who God wants us to become is developed in community and relationship.

The theme this week is all about doing life together, highlighting some of the reasons why this is important for us as men. Don’t do life alone, because what God wants to grow in you cannot happen in isolation. It happens in connection and community. Maybe you have withdrawn from relationships, or you haven’t found your way back to church or a community of faith. There is no better time than right now. You need us and we need you!
