The Reason Why

In Daily Devotional by Paul Fraser

Theme of the Week: A Life of Purpose

Bible Verse: “We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the LORD, and his might, and the wonders that he has done.” Psalm 78:4

Scripture Reading: Psalm 78:1-72

Here we are at the end of another week of devotionals. The theme all week has been about living “a life of purpose”. We have spent most of the week focused on the “what” and “how” of this theme, but I would like to end our devotional series with some thoughts about “why”.

Why would you make the effort to live a life of purpose? It seems inconvenient and challenging. Wouldn’t it be much easier to just let life happen and go with the flow? While that may seem appealing at times, especially when we are tired, we only have one shot at this thing called life.

Jesus seems to think stewardship is important. If you don’t believe me, read some of His other parables in the Gospels… it’s clear. So we better take it seriously. That’s the first reason why.

The second reason is tied to today’s Bible verses and reading. Everything we do should be viewed through the lens of “Is this going to make life better for our kids and grandkids?”.

Are we setting up the next generations to flourish and thrive? Are we being a great example of what a life of purpose looks like? Tough questions, I know, but ones that I think we should consistently ask ourselves because none of us want to make life more difficult for our kids or their kids.

So, let’s circle back to the things we talked about this week to help us leave the legacy God wants for the next generation. I think these things will help us intentionally live with purpose and set the right course for our lives.

Here they are: Find Your Unique Purpose, Seek a Strong Foundation, Live with Integrity, Strive to Serve, See Obstacles as Opportunities, and Be Generous with Your Journey.

I don’t need a stronger “why” than these. I want to be a good steward of my life and want the next generations to succeed more than I do. I want my ceiling in life to be their floor. What say you?

Prayer: Dear God, I want no wasted minutes in my life. Help me to be a good steward of my time and my life. Help me to find those around me who I can support, especially the younger generations. Thank you, God, that your plans and purposes for my life, and the investments I make, will outlive me.

Reflection: Who am I mentoring currently? Who could I be supporting that’s younger than me? Have I become a little clearer on my life’s purpose? If so, what’s a next step I need to take?
